Anne Arundel County Police arrested a security worker involved in a shooting Wednesday at Northrop Grumman’s facility in Linthicum that left one man dead.
Police are investigating the afternoon shooting at the aerospace and defense technology company’s complex along West Nursery Road, not far from Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Spokesperson Justin Mulcahy said Anne Arundel County Police were alerted to the shooting around 3:35 p.m. by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, who were the first to respond.
Two men, both contracted security workers, got into a heated verbal dispute, leading one to discharge his weapon, striking the other, Mulcahy said at a news conference. A third man, who also works in security at the facility, disarmed and detained the man who fired, Mulcahy said.
“That’s a very, very traumatizing thing to have happened there, certainly in a workplace,” Mulcahy said, adding that it was “fortunate” the third security guard intervened.
Anne Arundel County Police said the security worker who is the alleged shooter is in custody. Law enforcement and company officials said this is an isolated incident that did not involve any Northrop Grumman employees, though employees were in the building at the time.
“We are working with local law enforcement as they investigate the incident,” a spokesperson for Northrop Grumman said in a statement. “The safety of our employees and contractors at all our facilities remains our top priority.”
Police have not released any identifying information about the decedent or the suspect.
The Linthicum campus is one of the defense company’s largest sites and is home to the Northrop Grumman Advanced Technology Lab and Northrop Grumman Mission Systems. The company develops microelectronics, advanced sensing systems, navigation tools and other defense technologies. Northrop Grumman employs roughly 95,000 people across the country.
In its latest earnings report, the company said it brought in sales of $11.7 billion in the last quarter of 2025, a 10% increase from the year prior. The company’s stock was up 1.5% Wednesday at $689.13.
